India's holiest city — intense, chaotic, and deeply spiritual. Major ghats are safe but the narrow old city lanes require caution. Cultural sensitivity is essential.
Women's Safety
Major ghats (Dashashwamedh, Assi) are well-populated and safe. Avoid narrow lanes in old city alone after dark. Ganga Aarti is a must-see and safe with crowds. Use hotel-arranged boat rides. Some reports of harassment in crowded lanes—be assertive. Women-only areas available at some ghats during bathing.
Scam Alerts
Self-appointed guides at ghats demanding payment, boat operators charging inflated prices, fake flower/puja offering sellers, silk shop scams (fake Banarasi silk), donation scams at temples, priests demanding excessive dakshina.
Transport Safety
Auto-rickshaws available but can't enter old city—walk or take cycle rickshaws. Boats on Ganga should be licensed. Train from Delhi/Mumbai is the best way to arrive. Traffic in Varanasi is chaotic.
